(UPI) Composer Arthur Schwartz, who wrote the scores of Broadway's most memorable melodies including "Dancing in the Dark" and "That's Entertainment," died yesterday at his home.

He was 83. No cause of death was announced. Schwartz collaborated with Broadway's finest lyricists, including Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Frank Loesser and Leo Robin, but he was most noted for his longtime partnership with Howard Dietz, who died last year. In addition in the Dark" and "That's Entertainment," Schwartz and Dietz wrote "By Myself," "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan," "You and the Night and the Music," "Alone Together" and "Something to Remember You By." Schwartz's career spanned six decades and his work was marked by romantic, graceful melodies often compared with the music of Jerome Kern. Schwartz, responsible for stage and screen hits such as "The Band Wagon" and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," began collaborating with Dietz in 1929's "The Little Show," which featured the song "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan." It eventually became a standard.

Other shows included "Three's A Crowd," "At Home Abroad," "Inside USA," "By the Beautiful Sea" and "The Gay Life," whose score was considered to be one of Schwartz's masterpieces. AP Arthur Schwartz Wrote memorable melodies In addition to his songwriting career, he produced several Hollywood films including "Night and Day," a biography of Cole Porter, and "Cover Girl," starring Rita Hayworth. He held a master's degree in literature from Columbia University and passed the bar in 1924. His last show was "Jennie" in 1963, starring Mary Martin. "That's Entertainment," an anthology of SchwartzDietz songs, had a short run i in 1972.

Evelyn Hughes of Ashland dies at 77 ity as part of the baseball stadium replacement drive. Also, the Arena's use as a public hall is to be eliminated when the new exhibition hall, to be operated by the city in conjunction with the Richmond Marriott as the convention center, is built. Johnson said the administration has not decided how the exhibition hall would be operated. Asked whether it would be part of the community facilities department, he said, "That has not been finalized yet but we would anticipate that." Johnson said he expected operation of the hall and the Coliseum to be coordinated so that the hotel, the hall and the Coliseum could be marketed jointly as a convention location.

Earlier this summer, the City Council moved to change its agreements with Marriott Corp. so that the city, and not Marriott, would build, own and directly control the exhibition hall. Johnson said he expected to continue as community facilities director. But regardless of the new setup, he added, his department is due for reorganization. "The department would still have the Coliseum as part of its operation and would have general supervisory responsibility over the management company.

"And this is all assuming that we successfully negotiate an agreement with these folks because if we can't successfully negotiate an agreement we have the option of going back to the second-ranked bidder or dropping the whole concept. But even if we did that there would be some reorganization." Johnson said the arrangement with Spectacor Management will not include maintenance of the Coliseum's major mechanical systems, such as heating, cooling and the like. "Because we do such a good job with the maintenance and operation of that equipment and it's so expensive and complicated, we don't want to entrust that to anyone else. "And, you know, being quite honest, if you've got somebody in to do a management piece and they have to cut costs, then one of the easiest places to cut is in an area like that where the results of cutting that cost don't show up for three or four years." He said negotiations with Spectacor Management will be going on by telephone and in person, with the aim of bringing the matter before the City Council for its approval by the second meeting in September. "It's a pretty complex kind of arrangement," Johnson said.
